Should Christians Be In Business?
By Andy Bacon
The question I am asked a lot is "Should Christians Be In Business?" The implication being that Christians are somehow tainted if they own a business. This is nonsense. There is nothing wrong with Christians owning a business. Christians have been owning small and large businesses for 2000 years. This belief that Christians should not be in business comes from a misinterpretation of part of the Bible. Jesus told the fisher brothers to stop fishing for fish and join him as the fished for mens souls. Some people take this to mean that every Christian should drop their choice of livelihood and take a vow of poverty and spread the good word. There are some people that are called to this type of life. They are called to a vow of poverty and a vow to spend every waking moment in prayer or in spreading the word. The people who are called to this work should do this work but not everyone who is a Christian has this particular calling. Some of us are called to marry and raise a family in order to perpetuate the Christian lifestyle. If every Christian took a vow of celibacy then the Word of Our Father would quickly die out. There would be no one carry on the spreading of the Word. All through history there have been Christians who were bakers, butchers, and candlestick makers. It is the same today with a few changes to the job categories. Good Christians are factory workers, engineers, teachers, and yes pastors. So if it is OK for Christians to be in business, how should they act? This is the big question. When a Christian is doing business he or she should always act within the teaching of Jesus. This means being honest, being truthful, and giving good value. A good Christian does not take advantage of others by trying to over charge for inferior products. He or she does not offer inferior products. The Christian errs on the side of giving the customer more than they expect because we realize our riches are not here but in heaven. This does not mean we give everything away. We have to think of our other obligation which is to our family. We are charged with clothing and feeding and teaching the young souls that have been placed in our care. We must balance their needs with our customer's needs. We do not want to short change either one. As you can see, Christians can be in business. In fact business would be better if more people operated with Christian values. If we thought of our customers as necessary to our business instead of people to be bilked out of all the money we can, then we would not be in the terrible financial mess we are in now. The current financial problems in the US and the rest of the world is a direct result of greed. People forgot all about the relationships with their customers and instead only thought about the money they could suck out of society. They didn't only steal from the fat cats of Wall Street they stole from everyone. They sold worthless bonds to schools, and hospitals, and retirement funds. They made a promise that the investments were good and in reality they were nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Last year there was a Wall Street operator who made 4 Billion dollars for his bonus. That is 4 Billion with a B. And what did he produce for this outrageous payday? Absolutely nothing. All he did was move other people's money around until no one could find the trail anymore and when it was sufficiently hid he moved it into his own bank account. These people stole just like the bank robber or the punk who holds up a mini-mart. They lied and cheated and made off with the life savings of millions of people. Good people who had worked their whole lives and saved for a retirement with dignity. Instead they will be forced to do any kind of work they can find to survive. True Christians do not operate like these people on Wall street. This is not doing business. It is stealing through and through and this in not what business is about. Christians definitely should not steal but they can be in legitimate businesses. In fact they should be in business to bring integrity back to commerce. |
